PETER BOURSNELL

Peter Boursnell

Born Cambridge 1955, died London 2017

Pete Boursnell had a huge enthusiasm for working with young people and helping them to make the most of their opportunities in life. He was an enthusiastic walker and mountaineer and organised many climbing and skiing trips for pupils at Claremont High School, where he worked for many years.

In 2004, he became Coordinator of Brent Aimhigher. There he found an opportunity to put into practice his belief that students from any background could flourish if they were given the opportunity. He worked tirelessly to break down the barriers that made entry into certain universities more difficult for some and helped over 1,000 students with their applications.

Pete was awarded an MBE in 2011 for ‘services to fair access to higher education’, an award he valued not for the thing itself but for what it represented about the values he believed in.

When the Aimhigher programme came to an end, Pete set up futureHigher to encourage increased access to higher education and the professions and he continued to work with many students across London.

Sadly, Pete died on June 5th 2017 of a heart condition in his sleep. Family, friends, colleagues and former students celebrated his life at his funeral on Monday July 10th in the South West Middlesex Crematorium.  Thank you so much to everyone who came and made it such a special and uplifting occasion.
